COBRA alternatives

What to compare when continuing your old plan turns out to be the expensive option.

Why COBRA feels expensive

COBRA typically continues the plan you already had, including the network you already use. What changes is who pays: the portion an employer previously covered generally shifts to you, so the monthly cost can rise sharply even though the benefits look identical.

What to compare it against

Compare COBRA to individual options on four points: monthly cost, deductible, maximum out-of-pocket, and whether your current providers participate. If a different plan keeps your providers at a materially lower monthly cost, the trade may be worth it. If it doesn't, continuity may be worth paying for.

Timing matters here, because the window to choose alternative coverage after losing employer coverage is limited.
